SAINT GIMIGNANO
Dispensable Worthwhile Very recommendable Marvel

Located 1 h. far away from Florence this original medieval village stands out with its numerous stone towers. It is really a pleasure to walk though the cobbled narrow streets and the main square.
The village passed from a great cultural flourishing during Middle Ages to a progressive decadence that would end whit its submission to Florence in 1353. This fact would even help more to the degradation and abandon. The result is that they only remain 14 among the 72 medieval towers.

We spent a great morning wandering across this tourist village, observing the towers, the churches and the streets. The main street is fantastic, you can have an idea of the aspect in the past. The street is crammed with souvenir shops. Pay attention to the fine alabaster objects, especially the chess tables and figures. We couldn't resist the temptation of tasting the typical sweets of this region. If you continue along the street you appear in the main square , really wonderful, surrounded by towers, palaces, the cathedral and some museums. You will get surprise the amounts of museum and churches in a so small village.

You can visit many spots, such as some towers (to reach the top), the People Palace, museums and churches. I also recommend going towards the stronghold called Roca di Montestaffoli, which offers nice views of the towers and the village. There is few to add about San Gimignano. It is a charming place that invites you to wander and to search for beautiful corners. With half morning it is enough to enjoy it with calm. From this village there are buses driving to the nearby Sienna.
