It is a village located between the lakes Thun and Brienz, and this is the origin of the name. When you arrive here you feel that you are approaching the Switzerland of the postcards. Any train you take shows spectacular landscapes.
Interlaken hasn't got much charm, and it is the departure point for many tourist excursions (crowds of Japanese and Americans) to the Alps, such as Jungfrau or Schilthorn. The village has little attractive and it is full of souvenir shops, but the environment is superb. You could also accommodate at the close Thun or Brienz, since they are also nice spots to start your journeys from and probably they are cheaper. We had found a nice cheap accommodation in Interlaken, called Happy Inn, which offered a great globetrotter atmosphere. They were very kind and when we returned to Interlaken later on during this same interrail, we came here again. The owner is very funny.
One tip. If you are seeking a room at the surroundings, keep in mind that the trains prices are abusive, so the more trains you have to take, the worse for your budget. Maybe it is worthwhile a bigger and more expensive village than a charming cheaper rural house. Try to study it well. Indeed, despite our interrail pass we had to pay an important fee at many trains across this region. |
If you visit it during summer you may be lucky and have the opportunity to attend the William Tell's play. The citizens (amateurs) perform since 1912 the history about the hero of the Swiss Independence (14th century), several days a week. The legend tells us about the beginning of Switzerland. This legendary hero is famous due to his skills with the crossbow. Gessler, a Habsburg's governor, condemned William to throw an arrow against an apple placed on the head of his son, because William had refused to salute the Gessler's hat. The arrow went through the apple, but he was jailed anyway. He managed to escape and he killed Gessler. It is not known when the legend was born, but it is probable that outside Switzerland. |

Due to the nasty weather that prevented us from doing anything around this region, we made some excursions from Interlaken to several spots: Lucerne, Zermatt, Bern and Geneva.
Interlaken has a great terrace offer to have refreshment or a coffee. You could have a bath in the Rhine as well.
You can guess that this marvellous region brings many tourists and souvenir shops. |
