ZERMATT
Dispensable Worthwhile Very recommendable Marvel

Exasperated with the horrible weather and realising that our days in Switzerland were ending we decided to go towards this far village from Interlaken to try luck with the weather. Unfortunately, it was the cloudiest day. The clouds formed a uniform layer that didn’t allow us to see any mountain.
train from Brig to Zermatt

I give the maximum score to this place because the trip, the visit to Zermatt and the ascension to the Matterhorn (despite we couldn’t appreciate it) are something impressive and extraordinary.
The first thing I will describe is the train journey. In less than two hours we travelled from Interlaken to Brig.
In Brig you must take another spectacular and quite expensive train that carried us until Zermatt. The landscapes are superb, with deep precipices crossed by suspended bridges. This trip lasts for 1 h. and 40 min.

We reached Zermatt, a very tourist station for skiers and mountaineers. When you leave the train station you enter the Bahnhofstrasse , a very lively street, with electric cars (no fuel cars allowed), hotels and shops. You notice that they take much care of the village's aspect, very clean and adorned with thousands of flowers. It is impossible to buy anything, since the prices are exorbitant.

Zermatt and the Matterhorn

However people don't come here due to any of these reasons. Majestic, imposing and lonely, there it raises the rock mass called Matterhorn or Cervin (4.634 m.) , a spectacle of the nature and one of the images that best represents Switzerland. The summit was reached for the first time in 1865, and it is the highest in Switzerland.
We were willing to take the cable car, but the weather prevented us from it. There are numerous excursions across the region to stay for many days walking or trekking. I was astonished when I saw the spectacular postcards, and I was sad because I couldn't see it on my own. Instead of a picture I show a postcard for you to make an idea of what I am describing.

After the deception due to the impossibility of ascending and the money spent we had the consolation of the walk through the authentic and ancient village of Zermatt , full of ancient wooden houses. It was like entering another world, isolated from everything, completely rustic and calm.
After enjoying the wooden village despite the rain, we took back the train until Brig.

From Zermatt it leaves one of the most famous trains world-wide. It is the Glacier Express, which crosses Switzerland from Zermatt to Saint Moritz throughout an incredible and romantic way in the middle of mountains and impressive landscapes. We forgot about this option as soon as we knew the price.
