Further to my question below, is it essential to book train travel for August in advance. I want to travel, Krakow-Warsaw early on Sunday morning, Warsaw-Gdansk probably on Tuesday evening and Gdansk-Poznan.

You can always get a ticket at the train station, but you will have to wait in line if you don't book in advance.  If you plan on traveling during the weekend in Europe, it will be busy so it's a good idea to buy your tickets online.  You don't want to waste time waiting in line at a train station when you can be enjoying your vacation.
